2010 Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16m Review And Images

Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16m Review And Images

First answer: It represents the 16 Formula 1 constructors titles won by Scuderia Ferrari, the most recent being in 2008. We'll tell you about the first one at the end of this story.

First question: What the heck does 16M mean?

For this super spider, Ferrari applied what it did for the Scuderia coupe to the open version of the F430.

Through extensive use of carbon fiber, Ferrari has removed 176 pounds from the F430 Spider for the Scuderia, paring the curb weight down to 3168 lb. With the 4.3-liter V-8 making 510 bhp at 8500 rpm and 347 lb.-ft. of torque at 5250 rpm, channeled through a 6-speed F1-Superfast2 gearbox that spits out shifts in just 60 milliseconds, 62 mph comes in a claimed 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 196 mph, at which point it is probably quite breezy in the cockpit.

Ferrari says this is the fastest production spider it has produced. We can tell you that, like the hardtop Scuderia, the soft top is capable of being both racetrack quick and street savvy, equally adept on either without being too hard edged. And it lets you know when you are on the power by abruptly going from being legally quiet to unnervingly noisy. Bam, quick as that.

While a standard F430 Spider's base price is $217,310, the 16M starts at $308,000 and is out the door at $313,350. But you'll have one of only 499 built.

Oh, and Ferrari's first F1 constructors title? The same year Phil Hill won his driving title, 1961.
